We may not have shared his enthusiasm for all of the music he championed, but the knowledge that John Peel considered it worthwhile made it worth at least a second hearing. Indeed, having spotted some indefinable spark in their work, he was responsible for giving radio-play to many artists and bands who might otherwise never have made it beyond the pub-circuit. Unlike so many radio-DJs he did not pursue stardom for himself but achieved, by his commitment to his work, a standing and a level of respect far in excess of those who did and do. To many thousands - indeed, millions - of people, he was an Invisible Friend whose word was always worth listening to and whose opinion could be relied upon to have been carefully considered and to come straight from the heart. How tragic it is that the same heart should let him down so early. His place in music- and broadcasting-history is assured and his passing leaves a huge gap in the lives of his audience. As a part of that audience which has much cause to thank him, our deepest sympathy goes out to his family and those fortunate enough to have known him personally. RIP,
